JNNA, 93% Stardust, on Working her Dust off Pursuing Music Head First

November 28, 2017

When someone is determined to get somewhere, the only question becomes how, not if. This perfectly explains Jenna Green / JNNA. Knowing how focused JNNA is about music, it is hard to believe how charismatic and charming she is off-duty. This rising singer is undoubtedly on the way to her reservation to be seated among the stars.

Please introduce yourself, including what you do and what you are passionate about.

"My name is Jenna, I go by JNNA & I’m an LA born and raised electro/pop artist ❤️ I’m, first and foremost, passionate about all things music."

In which situation/ series of events/ moment did you realize your passion?

"I’ve always loved music, more specifically singing and this became very clear to me when I first started taking lessons when I was 8. My vocal coach spent an hour, a few times a week with me, having me do vocal warmups and then I’d choose a song of my choice and begin learning it. We practiced the song for a few weeks and then she’d have a recital with all of her students. I remember singing (and being obsessed) with “If I Ain’t Got You” by the one and only Alicia Keys. That was during the MTV music video era so I distinctly remember  watching that music video repeatedly. Long story short, all it took was a little push to get up on that stage, to realize that music would be a part of my life for good."

To A,F, postponing your freedom usually means holding off on what you’d prefer to do in order to please others, or follow a “norm”. When/ how did you decide not to postpone your freedom?

"It wasn’t until my father passed that I realized making music was what I wanted to be doing. The thought of wasting another moment in school studying something that I didn’t even plan on pursuing in life wasn’t what I pictured for myself. I saw my friends studying things they cared about, but what I cared about all along was music. I just decided then and there to jump in head first."

What is a setting/ activity/ routine that makes you the most happy? Anything at all.

"I love nothing more than just driving around blowing my eardrums with just about any tune ranging from Little Dragon, Beck, The Shins, Gorillaz, Lauryn Hill, Ben Howard, Tove Lo...the list goes on...a pretty backdrop doesn’t hurt. Luckily, we have plenty in LA. ...oh, and watching The Office, cuddled on the couch with my boyfriend and our cat and dog is pretty great too."

What is your motto to yourself? / What motivates you?

"I try to remember to just keep working hard. Even when I get down on myself and think that I’m not the most talented out there and I don’t have the greatest voice compared to other artists out there, I just remember that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard."

Why do you think most people settle for a career or life they don’t love?

"The thought of failure. Fear of failure can be incredibly crippling. Sometimes you just gotta say, 'fuck it, why not' and give it a shot."

What simple advice would you give to people hesitant to pursue their interests?

"You’ll never know if you don’t try."

What is your favorite quote?

“We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains. 93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names.” -Nikita Gill
